ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Hannelie Coetzee hosted a second #FireGrazer burn at NIROX Sculpture Park titled Locust & Grasshopper On the 20th of May 2017 Hannelie Coetzee presented the second Art-Science #FireGrazer performance at the NIROX Sculpture Park, in partnership with University of the Witwatersrand scientists Sally Archibald (Ecologist) and James Harrison (Entomologist), Working on Fire, NIROX Sculpture Park and 5D Surveys. This performance entailed the live burning of imagery created by Coetzee onto the grassland, building on the artistic practice of Coetzee which uses art as a tool to communicate complex systems and build awareness of pressing ecological issues. This #FireGrazer artwork, titled Locust & Grasshopper, is a follow-up and re-burn of the 2015 artwork Eland & Benko. Members of the public were invited to join Coetzee and partners as they live-burnt a new image into the grasslands. This burn will be superimposed over the 2015 #Fire grazer burn Eland & Benko much like re-imprinting experience so that the landscape ‘remembers’ the previous burn. About the project and the event Coetzee explores human relations with nature and how it evolves. She works closely with various scientists to learn and understand their inquiries, whilst looking for leverage points to communicate important findings in the science through her artworks. As the parallel inquiry of Art and Science develop a robust relationship, they learn each other’s language with the aim to apply a more sustainable harmony between these disciplines and nature. The audience will joined the artist on a 6-km hike to view the #Firegrazer performance followed by a small solo exhibition of Coetzee’s two-dimensional work at the NIROX Sculpture Park pavilion, the watercolour pressings of grasshoppers in this series.

My works are often made from industry waste, such as mining core, mainly to reduce my environmental footprint, and to a lesser extent because of limited capital. When making site specific work, I engage with the public moving through that space to ensure the work has meaning and participatory capacity for them. This practice, along with my concern for the environment, has led me to make work that has an actual impact on the environment.
