This painting is a part of a series of self- portraits that the artist painted for a self-reflection project. In this series the artists drew herself at different stages of her life, in this portrait, in particular, she was inspired by images of the Black Madonna. The rich bright bold reds and golds that were used in Renaissance paintings, she wanted to bring that type of painting into the 21st century.
