Blue Sails at Dawn Print - Limited Edition of 25

Printmaking: Monotype on Cardboard, Paper and Soft (Yarn, Cotton, Fabric). Size: 15 H x 22 W x 0.1 in " Blue Sails at Dawn " is one of a series of four using collagraph monoprint techniques. These works are printed on high quality Somerset paper. Monoprinting produces a unique print while allowing the artist to experiment with form, texture and colour variations. The variety of printing techniques, especially monotype, can create a sensuous, velvety quality , differing from conventional painting. I enjoyed working in this medium and exploring composition and subtle colour differences , sometimes masking out areas with Chine collé (adhering thin pieces of Japanese paper onto print). In "Blue Sails at Dawn " I masked out areas which were bigger than the shapes on the plate, before making the first print , this allowed the original paper colour to show through . I like the way it adds a "bleeding edge" quality to the work. I made a number of prints, each time moving the image to create a layered effect ( see bobbing boats, top left).
