Printmaking, Lithograph on Paper
Size: 22 W x 15 H x 0 D in
Inspired by the expeditions to Central America by Frederick Catherwood in the mid-1800's, this lithograph employs imagery from the ancient Mayan city of Tulum as well as the iconic Darwin Martin house located in Buffalo, NY. The intent is to create a stark comparison of two disparate places and cultures which have ebbed and flowed with prosperity and disparity; a trend which is wholly connected with human civilization.

Evan Hawkins is a native of Richmond, VA who currently resides in Madison, WI. He is currently pursuing his Master of Fine Arts at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a concentration in printmaking from the University at Buffalo in 2011. At the University, he was the recipient of the Morrison Scholarship and the Eugene Gaier Printmaking Award. His prints have been included in print exchanges in Derbyshire, England and Seattle, WA and have been exhibited in numerous group and solo exhibitions in Western New York at venues including the Arnot Art Museum, Echo Art Fair, UB Anderson Gallery, Big Orbit Gallery, Western New York Book Arts Center, the Buffalo Niagara Visitor Center Gallery, Ashker's, Hallwalls and Buffalo Arts Studio. My practice explores the rich visual and metaphorical commonalties between the culture and history of ancient civilizations and the rapid economic and physical ascent and subsequent decline of post industrial cities. This has been influenced by my fascination of the pervasive urban decay in places I have lived and traveled to and the underlying trends of decline in human civilization. My exacting hand drawn lithographs have been inspired by my research of the imagery of prints of Mayan ruins made in the early 1800s. By weaving the architecture of post classical Mayan ruins with Native American inspired art deco buildings, I am attempting to make these fictionalized spaces tangible and the works have evolved as my understanding of these two separate histories and cultures has deepened.
