About The Artwork

This monotype was inspired by the sculpture of the same title, Closer, that I created earlier in ceramic. Printmaking allows me to explore what I can't express in 3D, especially in the negative space. Whilst the sculpture infers a space contained in the figure, here I can actually show it as a shadow. The grey shadow looks like it is hugged by the figure, but it can reveal someone else who is embraced as well as a facet of the figure that is unseen or purposefully not revealed to others. Therefore the figure either hugs a loved one or herself/himself in an act of self-love. The work of famed cubist Henry Laurens informed this series of monotypes. I used a couple of techniques, color blocking and tracing, and finally I detailed the shadow in pencil where necessary. This is the work of many steps and is unique, as all monotypes are.

Annick Ibsen is a sculptor and painter. Born in Paris and a resident of Des Moines for the past 15 years, she also experienced a breadth of cultures living in Africa and Asia. Her neo-cubist sculptures displace the viewer's expectations to unveil the actual. In her search for realism, she also establishes connections between figurative and sculptural art forms with mixed media paintings that explore negative space. Perhaps sculpture is not the form that fills space, but how the form opens space in relationship to it, including in the mind of the viewer.
