DUET - Limited Edition of 10 Print

This image was inspired by an old man busking with a saxophone outside Myer in the Melbourne CBD during Christmas. Through his music, the man is in a dialogue with his own shadow, and as a result of his music, his presence – like his shadow – is larger and more powerful than he could be alone. I intentionally ignored the illustrative elements of the scene, i.e. the context: buildings, the footpath, and other pedestrians, in order to emphasise the urban alienation of this lonely figure. And yet, by being so completely in-the-moment, the musician offers us all an invitation to step outside of the regularity of ordinary life, and the consumerism, which so characterises the city at this time of year, and to enter another space, a space of his own creation.
