Jan Freek Lulof was born in 1965 in Enschede. He studied mixed media, painting and media art at the Academy of Arts and Industry in Enschede, where he completed his degree under the guidance of the Canadian artist Noel Harding. Other influential teachers were Madelon Hooykaas en Ad Gerritsen. Jan Freek Lulof has a studio at the Art Studios Güterbahnhof in Bremen. He lives and works in Amsterdam and Bremen. Jan Freek is an artist at least since he drew the work “Cell”, when he was 16. He makes art because he thinks there is no better way to explore life. He considers himself to be a conceptual artist that is trying to be physically expressive, or a physically expressive artist who is very much interested in concepts. He thinks those two ends should meet in the middle, presenting the idea, as well as the free expression, or the other way around. But in the end all the work should be romantically driven and made with tremendous concentration. Jan Freek is interested in identity, how to maintain purity or how to become more pure, and the question if that is really possible, and what to meet in this process. He is also very much interested in how to broaden his mind, to listen to the inner voice his conscience is leading him. Jan Freek let the idea alone to become an artist when he was faced to the physical and emotional limits of being an artist and what he still was able to express. Nevertheless he did keep on making works, but did not step into the world with them. In February 2012 he decided to start working more professional, he got his studio in Bremen. He started drawing and painting, and worked on, and finished the installation after the book " Someone, noone and onehundredthausend" by Luigi Pirandello. A book that is dealing with the question of identity. This installation was finished and documented in April 2013 and has not been exposed yet. He is also interested in the idea and the experience of space. He worked on a drawing series and a 5.1 surround art work that contains four languages. He is also slowly and continuously working on the series Feline, work for his dearest friend Anke, and a video related to the audiowork "Babel"'. For his coming newborn he is working on an installation with the working title: "A design for life, the birth of a nation".
