About The Artwork

A unique stamp is made by creating a composition with different materials – cloth, thread, ink – on a surface and then pressing paper against it. The materials are lost and only their imprint is left on the paper. The work is signed by the artist and measures 70 x 50cm.

Eleni Kindyni, b. 1990, Nicosia, is a fresh Fine Art graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts “Pietro Vannucci” at Perugia in Italy. The two main art forms used to communicate the artist’s reflections are installations and printmaking. In her installations, the repeated use of found objects and clothing carry a fragment of the real life and marks the passing of time, with clothing being in addition an imprint of the human body; meaning the daily life, behaviour, its real questions. In printmaking, only the mark of the materials used is present and visible on the paper. Mark, imprint and memory, is what printmaking is all about. The result on the paper in each stamp is the mark of the materials which lose their physical consistency. After the battle between acid and metal in etching and between ink and different materials in monotypes what survives is an imprint, the result of this battle. In the same way in life, what remains alive through the years are the marks and the memories of what has happened. Relationships and situations cannot be stable or permanent, however, their memory and the experience created because of them keep them alive and active in the present. Although the physical presence of the things is lost, there is always an imprint that survives that is perhaps even more valuable and real than the original. Inspired by Albero Burri, Claudio Parmiggiani and Christian Boltanski, artists of our times who invite us through their artwork to live again, despite the emptiness that we may have experienced; an awakening call that forces us to rise from our ashes. Their work is a stimulus which reflects questions regarding life, death, pain and trauma. They do not provide any answers, but they offer us the question itself. “Art is not just a way of expressing myself; art for me means to ‘dive’ into my inner self and discover the originality that exists in everyone, express it, bring it to the outer world and give others the chance to recognise parts of themselves in my work”.
