Eccentric Family Tree––Hugo & Margo Print

I grew up on the drawings of Charles Addams and other illustrators whose picture of America went against the stereotype version fed to us by advertising and suburban culture. The depiction of the weirdness underneath the normal, conventional, square facade. So here are Hugo and Margo and their eccentric and obviously dim offspring, no evident decline in prosperity but real decline in other respects. Sometimes I draw what I think are going to be normal people and there is abnormality in the result. This is something that's more noticeable in aggregate, in group portraits like this one. The names and the costumes are a cheap disguise. You could almost convene a dinner party around these people. Our families look like this. Pencil and chalk on the back of a manila envelope, the kind of envelope lunatic asylums use to correspond with "the profession." Er-H
