About The Artwork

This piece was created as a limited edition photoengravure etching from my original hand drawing of The Vennel Steps in Edinburgh. As a printmaker I wanted to challenge myself by using the photoengravure technique which is usually reserved for reproducing photographs. The technique adds a beautiful depth to my illustration, capturing every detail. The view looking up to Edinburgh Castle from the Vennel Steps is a beautiful vantage point with an intricate landscape in both the foreground and leading up to the castle. Hand printed onto Hahnemuhle 310gsm natural etching paper. Limited print run of 20, with a hand-torn paper edge. Each print has been individually inked and pressed and is signed and numbered by the artist.

Will Clarke’s illustrated prints of architectural landmarks are immediately recognisable. Born and raised in London, Will remains passionate about the changing nature of the urban landscape. With a love for iconic architecture, he has a particular interest in buildings with historical resonance and character. Some time ago Will undertook a six-month drawing of London, as seen from the dome of St Paul’s Cathedral. The illustration he created inspired him to undertake a series of architectural drawings, and he has been fascinated by architecture and the urban landscape ever since. Screen-printing, more than any other technique, gives Will the precision and control he needs to reproduce his very detailed line drawings. To this detail he likes to add bright blocks of colour and an element of abstraction – none of his drawings are exact renderings of what he sees – in order to produce urban scenes that are unique to his style. All of his original works are hand-drawn, then each edition screen-printed by Will in his studio. As well as regularly taking on private and commercial commissions, Will has also exhibited at a number of shows in London and across the UK. High profile commissions and clients include the Southbank Centre, Royal Academy of Arts and the NHS.
