About The Artwork

This print was inspired by an oil painting I did in 2004 of the same name. The print version of the composition is quite different. In essence it is inspired by the hills of California.

William H. Hays was born and raised in Virginia (US) and attend VPI & SU completing a degree in geography. After graduating, he moved to Alaska and later completed a degree in sculpture at the University of Alaska. In 1987 he moved to Brattleboro, Vermont where he lived for 32 years. In 2021 William moved to Turners Falls, Massachusetts. By 2007, William H. Hays had been a sculptor, a performance artist, an installation artist, a painter in watercolor and a painter in oils. His insatiable curiosity led him to explore new and more challenging ideas in every painting. In 2007 he began exploring printmaking with linocuts and intaglio drypoint etchings. It took five years of struggle to learn the complexities of the process and make the vocabulary of reduction printing his own. But the hook had been set and over time, William Hays became a printmaker and his unique voice rang loud and clear. Since becoming a full time printmaker, Hays' work has been seen across the US in galleries and juried competitions. His prints have received numerous awards and continue to gain recognition across the country. His work is now included in the permanent collections of the Boston Athenaeum, Syracuse University Galleries and the State of Vermont.
