About The Artwork

Around 1588 the Flemish master Printmaker Hendrick Goltzius created outstanding prints depicting the mythological figures of Tantalus, Icarus, Phaeton, and Ixion, who attempted to enter the realm of the gods. They were punished for their hubris and were depicted falling through space to their deaths. My work references these prints and the fall from grace that they depict but instead of the heroic classical male figure a man and a woman are shown tumbling through space toward an abyss that connects to the sea shining in the distance. The tondo is surrounded by lines from a poem, by Andrew Marvel written almost 100 years after the prints by Golzius. Marvel’s poem about love and seduction has a dark undertone that suggests that time is limited and life is finite. The inclusion of these lines bring together Marvel’s poem and Golzius’s mythology to remind the viewer of the unchanging human condition. The man and woman represented not only suggests the biblical story of the fall from grace but also serve as a metaphor for the process of falling in love and its inherent ultimate loss. They are edged by symbols of renewal and decay; spring (swallows) and autumn (leaves).

Working across a diverse range of printmaking mediums, my practice is largely focused on studio-based explorations of the figure and ground – this starts with a model or source material and is slowly adapted through a repetitive process of addition, subtraction and reworking. I've always held a long fascination with psychology and the intersection of culture, unconscious drives, and physiological symbolism. As such, many of my works see individuals represented in a narrative context that can incorporate my current interests in the areas of philosophy, film, literature, history and contemporary culture.
