About The Artwork

The woman is loosely based on my partner's grandmother. The title Familiar Ground is to do with her visiting her 'home country' of Portugal from Brazil. I've spent quite a bit of time in Portugal, particularly Lisbon, over the past few years. It's probably typical of some Northern European artists who are used to a lot of grey sky and muted colours, to feel drawn to the brightness of somewhere like Lisbon. The image has a bit of melancholy in it, I suppose. But it is also a celebration of light and sun. Hopefully, at least. I made some abstract inkjet prints to use as the base layers for the handprinted linocuts, which I put on top in yellow and ultramarine, in a very rough and loose manner. I like the outcome. But please note, each image in this edition varies slightly, regarding texture and composition. Signed and numbered.

Freddie is a multi-disciplinary artist. His work is rooted in the traditions of image-making; figurative painting, drawing, collage and printmaking, though projects and ideas can expand into video, animation, action and intervention. He studied creative writing at University and worked for a number of years as a freelance illustrator. These formative experiences contributed to his current practice – one that is concerned with narrative and human journeys, often threaded together with cinematic and poetic touches. He was recently invited to take part in the Symposium for Across Borders: Body and Self, presented by Counterpoints Arts UK and coculture, curated by Natasha Davis, in Berlin. Freddie currently lives and works in London. He has exhibited and carried out collaborative projects internationally.
