ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Calculus (from Latin calculus, literally "small pebble used for counting on an abacus")[1] is the mathematical study of continuous change, in the same way that geometry is the study of shape and algebra is the study of generalizations of arithmetic operations. It has two major branches, differential calculus (concerning rates of change and slopes of curves),[2] and integral calculus (concerning accumulation of quantities and the areas under and between curves);[3] these two branches are related to each other by the fundamental theorem of calculus. Both branches make use of the fundamental notions of convergence of infinite sequences and infinite series to a well-defined limit

Nature derives a strength and economy of form from geometry, its patterns are observed everywhere in the natural world, from molecular structures to planetary systems. In contemplating the interrelationships of planes and colour I find that the universal language of geometry and mathematics provide me with a set of rules or guiding principles. I find inspiration fundamentally in nature, and hope through using the tools and materials at my disposal to extract a kind of distillation and fix in physical form a thing that otherwise remains hidden. I’m inspired by the prospect of inventing forms and pictures for which there are no other means of expression and for which words are inadequate to describe. Being an artist and producing works of Art can sometimes feel like inhabiting that realm shared by the alchemist chasing an elusive target: searching for that rarefied object using mere sticks and mud, wood and glue and coloured powders.
