About The Artwork
Pastel and charcoal medium has always been my preferred technique as I believe it is a very convenient medium within the realistic school of art which I like very much. I do love the feeling of pastel material on my fingers and hands. Mixing and playing with the substance is essential in my opinion to stay close to my artwork until it is finished. Within the portraits of animals and humans, which characterize my thematic repertoire, I dedicate a lot of attention to details, from delicate lines on a face or hands to the spots of a tiger's fur, from mustaches and eyelashes to lips and hairpins. Similarly, a focus on the subject's eyes is, in my opinion, of the utmost importance to correctly see the soul of a living being. I was born in Alexandria (Egypt) in 1963 and graduated from the faculty of Political and Economic Sciences of the University of Cairo in 1984. I entered the diplomatic service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs a year later and served in Egyptian Embassies in London, Santiago de Chile, Berlin, New Delhi, Montevideo and Bogotá. I currently work as the Ambassador of Egypt to Colombia. My first trials in the technique of pastel were realized in 1987 in London after attending a weekend workshop with the British artist Colin Bradley in Broadstairs, Kent. He inspired me to continue developing my artistic talents in this field. Later on I started to practice with acrylics although the major part of my artwork is still in pastel medium.
