About The Artwork

Drypoint etching Épreuve d'État (one of a kind) Plate size: 5,7" x 3,9" (14,5 x 10 cm) Paper size: 10,4" x 8" (26,5 x 20 cm) December 2010 Signed, numbered (é.é.) and dated on the front Original hand pulled etching You will receive a Certificate of Authenticity. Épreuve d'État" are prints made during the cycle of the printing process. This piece is unique and unrepeatable. All materials meet archival standards for printmaking. I only use high-quality archival paper. Hommage á My medium is drawing and printing. The human being is my motive, more specifically the human body and how it relates to clothes, costume, fashion and fabric. I tend to arrange my work in series with scenes reminiscent of masters such as Frida Kahlo. A model is dressed up according to a particular theme. This is the visual basis. The end result, however, is not directly connected to the depicted subject but takes on a life of its own. Drypoint Drypoint is a printmaking technique of the intaglio family, in which an image is incised into a plate with a hard-pointed "needle" of sharp metal or diamond point. Traditionally the plate was copper, but now acetate, zinc, or plexiglas are also commonly used. Like etching, drypoint is easier for an artist trained in drawing to master than engraving, as the technique of using the needle is closer to using a pencil than the engraver's burin.

............ ute@uterathmann.com .............. "Edgar Degas said that "Drawing is the artist's most direct and spontaneous expression, a species of writing: it reveals, better than does painting, his true personality." Degas is one of the artist's that has influenced Berlin-based Ute Rathmann, whose stunning drawings of the human form are in many international collections. Inspired by old masters such as Klimt, Schiele, Toulouse-Lautrec and Goya, this graduate of the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee works from life models, dressing her subjects according to a particular theme, in order to explore the human body and how it relates to clothes, costume, fashion and fabric."
