Intimacy is a simple gesture; a hand cupping a receiving face, an arm draped over a welcoming back, the pressing of posterior to groin. These are the moments that Thion's new work explores; the points at which two entities are brought together as one form. There is a compelling sense of bravery in Thion's work. First, in the sense of a bold simplicity. By placing these vibrant forms in a void we are immediately interpolated by them, but suddenly our focus is narrowed further still to the very loci of these gestures of intimacy. There is no where else to look. Secondly, the sexuality present in these works (as hard as it is to admit in modern society) runs contrary to current hegemonic values. The bravery here is derived from making the source of potential outrage the singular focus common to these pieces. While society at large may try to censor these tender, human moments that unite us, Thion is unflinching in bring them to the forefront of his work. Perhaps most striking in the series, "In The Mirror", depicts a man, languidly reclining into that portal between the inner most mental and the outer most physical; a mirror. Watching on wistfully our subject explores both of these nether regions; an internal and external interrogation.

Franco La Russa (aka Thion) is an Italian multimedia artist and curator based in London. Initially inspired by Keith Haring and the American Pop artists with whom he shared the same interest in popular culture, Thion's work has evolved into a style that is purely his own. After studying Fine Art and Advertising and Graphic Design in Italy, he worked for several years as an Art Director an Illustrator for various agencies including Saatchi & Saatchi, McCann and Young & Rubican in Milan. He has since taken on a new digital medium and he is currently creating work that employs an iPad as a powerful tool that brings new possibilities to an established language and practice. Whether he chooses to draw in the traditional way directly on canvas or paper, drawings on an iPad, planning sculptures or whether he make short video installations, Thion's practice is a continuous integrated feedback loop, that remains open to the unexpected.
