About The Artwork

A glimpse into the underwater world. The Octopus changes colour, shape, size, mood and feeling: man is discovering the depths of this creature of the sea. It has intrigued and fascinated us for centuries. Here, using the Japanese art of Gyotaku (fish impression) an impression has been made capturing what might be a mood, emotion or feeling as the small octopus goes into hiding. Always ready to hunt, be hunted, inquire, rest, explore, mate and adapt - all in its short year long life. The original print is made with water colour paint on fine washi (Japanese paper) with several layers mounted (urauchi) together in a traditional manner. This artwork is my way of capturing these rarely seen creatures in a moment of time, connecting to my cultural heritage, transforming and creating for another. ***The original artwork has sold - archival 100% cotton rag reproductions now available in two sizes or custom size if you desire.

Paula grew up in Vancouver, Canada, daughter of a Japanese father and Dutch mother. Informed by West Coast nature, organic forms, water, mountains, often wild landscapes and a parallel study of human machinations, Paula's work is commentary on human condition and conditioning in found environment. Pieces are created as physical experience; works hang, swing, drape, become object, or result is in traditional form. Her work is rooted in exploration, inquiry and curiosity and evolves from flat surface to three dimension or performance dependent on concept and context. Her installations are experiences and participatory.
