About The Artwork

When I was sixteen and working after school at Liggett's Soda Fountain on the corner of Church and Chapel Streets in New Haven, I met this quirky guy one day as I was leaving to catch the bus for home. I don't remember him ever coming into the store. He was usually hanging outside not far from the corner. He was thin, not very tall with a pencil mustache and dressed in 30s and 40s period clothing including shirt and tie, a wide lapel sports coat, creased trousers, a fedora hat and sunglasses, all a bit too large. His pointed shoes were shined. He was a living caricature. Not far from him was his trusty old green bicycle with a "license plate" on the back reading "JD." At first he came on as a little threatening, introducing himself as John Dillinger, referencing I assumed, the famous 1930s bank robber. He opened his lapel to show me a plastic "law Badge" of some kind and informed me that I needed to "stay in line" if I knew what was good for me. I decided to assure him that I would stay in line and he seemed satisfied with that. As months passed and I continued to give him the respect and acceptance he craved, he warmed up to me and I to him. He was really a sweet and gentle man, though confused. I grew to l appreciate his innocence and he grew to trust me enough to greet me with a "Hey" and a half smile, dropping the phoney stern edge, I guess because I was one of the few people in town who didn't avoid him, judge him or make rude dismissive comments. I never disovered if his name was really John or John Dillinger and I don't believe he was homeless. I didn't know it at the time, but he gave me a gift. Since then and throughout my life, whenever I encounter someone disheveled, alone and perhaps down-and-out, if I can, I make eye contact, smile and maybe exchange a few words. Thank you for that, JD. and thanks to my friend Stu Cohen in New Haven for sharing an old black and white Polaroid of J.D. from back-in-the-day.

Born and raised in Connecticut, I was fortunate to be exposed to myriad artistic influences by way of my proximity to Yale University and New York City. Just before my move to Nashville about thirteen years ago I became enamored with Mixed Media. This platform offered endless material sources, tools and subject possibilities. My personal version of the form has been described as "Whimsical and Romantic," "Insightful and Intelligent," "Bold and Rich," and my personal favorite, "Uniquely off Center." Although Contemporary, influences evident in my work include Impressionism, Abstractionism and Pop Art, but generally speaking, I am not fond of labels. I instead choose to repurpose the words of Duke Ellington, "If it sounds good, it's good." As you might expect, I have no use for self appointed Critics poised to hand down declarations defining what is right and what is wrong. There is no right. There is no wrong. There is only what speaks to a viewer and what does not, but neither has any bearing on what I choose to create and how I choose to create it. My overall approach is greatly influenced by my fascination with light and perspective. I draw great satisfaction from challenging and contorting the parameters of both. What that yields is an "organism" that is essentially a reflection of how I perceive reality, my own personal not quite sane world. My ultimate goal is to move hearts and titillate minds. If I can bring a smile to your face or even better, alter in some small way what YOU see as reality, I am blessed. If you like my art and should decide to make a purchase, I would recommend that you not order the smallest size option shown under each thumbnail image. This is not about money, it is simply a question of what you will be able to see in a work. You are certainly free to buy a smaller size print, but there is quite a bit of detail in most of the prints that will not be easily observed in a smaller sized format.
