About The Artwork

Collectors are still waiting in line for the originals of Clark Hulings' Grand Canyon paintings, so this print is one of the best ways to have a canyon landscape of your own. "Kaibab Trail" won the inaugural Prix de West prize in 1973, and it's truly spectacular. The light and shadow on the snow in the foreground with the mules coming up the trail towards us, the feeling of the "fall" in the deep crevice with its weathered evergreens, the snow-covered orange granite giving way to purple rock in the distance, all the way to the almost-Renaissance puffy clouds. Hulings says in his book "A Gallery of Paintings" that he had to wait three days for snowfall. Then, the hired muleskinner did the hour-long trail circuit multiple times as Hulings took photographs throughout the day as material for his final composition. Printed on paper in limited editions. This print of Kaibab Trail is unsigned.

Clark Hulings (1922-2011) was born in Florida and raised in New Jersey. Over his lifetime, he resided in New York, Louisiana, and throughout Europe before settling in Santa Fe in 1972. Clark’s ability to see beauty in daily human gestures and activities won him the appellation “master” on numerous occasions. His celebration of textures as expressed through light, shadow, and atmosphere “describes the air itself,” according to the Christian Science Monitor. His range of subject matter was astonishing, “No one does as many things as well,” proclaimed Southwest Art. His modesty in the face of such acclaim was legendary. Throughout his career he maintained a personal profile far lower than his national reputation.
