Margulies works in the classical triumverate - painting (oils and watercolor), drawing (graphite, ink) and intaglio (etching and dry point). The artists strongest interest is in the human figure, and in landscape. He draws and paints from life, and interacts strongly with his subject matter, yielding representational work with strong expressivity. Margulies has been drawing and painting since childhood, with a hiatus of thirty years when he pursued a career in Biochemistry. He is largely self-taught. However, since the early nineties he has pursued academic training in studio art and in art history at Montgomery College, Rockville, MD.
Margulies has exhibited largely in the Washington, DC, Maryland and Virginia area. He has had work juried in to many competive shows. He has also had work juried into national shows. He has had one person shows.
Margulies has been active in the Rockville Art League. For two years he has been responsible for organizing December and May juried Member Shows, and for hanging other shows. He has been instrumental in initiating the Rockville Art League web site.
Margulies was born and raised in New York City. He moved to the Washington-Baltimore area in the late fifties. He received a B.A. in Biology-Chemistry from Brooklyn College, and the Ph.D. in Microbiology-Biochemistry from Yale University. He studied additionally at Johns Hopkins University, Harvard and the Weizmann Institute, and worked for twenty-seven years at the Smithsonian Institution.
