The boundary between the human body and the world at large is blurred and shifting, and often difficult to identify. It is not simply the physical barrier of the skin, but also the psychological sphere, which exists beyond basic corporeal boundaries. The reciprocal relationship between the physical and the psychological is influenced by greater social circumstances, not just by individual personality. The physical and psychological spheres are both important to the fluctuating public persona and the internally significant persona. The Homosexual community in America has evolved over the years, and it is continually changing. My work will focus on how select individuals in the community maneuvered through their lives during the 1950’s to the 1970’s. Homosexuals, that hid behind false lives to cover up their secrets from the world, carried tons of emotional baggage along the way. Most of the individuals I will depict are famous in some capacity, allowing for the viewer to see the dual identities of the individual. People during this period did not see homosexuality as we do today; rather, it was looked at as a crime. In order to survive, many would lead lavender marriages to cover their secret homosexual relationships. While there might have been speculation on their tendencies, many of the individuals went to the grave without their secret ever being revealed to the public. The silhouettes are a simplification and obfuscation of identity, used as a metaphoric framing device within my work, and for the truth of the person. Identity can be seen in several several different ways by people on the outside. Public identity conveys to the viewer how someone wants to be publicly perceived. While the person in the public eye has an identity known by fans, they may also have an alternative identity - a life carried on behind closed doors. The silhouettes and/ or text act as a disruption of the manufactured life that the individuals constructed for themselves as well as a way to insert myself into the work. The images of the silhouettes are taken from me and my partners bodies; the text is often borrowed from the individuals depicted in the drawn image. Limited Edition of 4!
