ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Birgit’s sweeping gestures, layered curves, and punctuating forms of saturated tones effortlessly carry the eye within and between compositions. While working primarily in encaustic monotype, laced with silver and gold, the artist maintains a lightness and depth that encourages one to look through the layers and engage with her prints. In her paintings on canvas, however, she varies her approach with a more direct and less nuanced hand which causes one to linger at the surface. This series demonstrates a consistency in artist performance as each artwork is a visual harmony which moves between abstraction and floral display to compel a closer look and find the small surprises that lay within each layer. Birgit exhibits a unique sensitivity and acuity in encaustic and mixed media that successfully translates her encounter with orchids and lush garden sanctuaries into lively organic artworks that are both accessible and a visual pleasure. – Wendy Schmidt, 2017

Birgit’s energetic works show a lush world, where nature is in constant celebration. Her lyrical abstractions reflect an intense relationship with the surrounding landscape, an intimate experience of wilderness which mirrors alluring and alarming oneself. At heart being a contemporary romanticist, she depicts the grandeur of nature and the place of humanity within it. She has exhibited nationally and internationally and is represented in Germany, The Netherlands, and in the US. Birgit won multiple awards nationwide. Her work was selected for, Saatchi Collections "New This Week" 2014-2022; The Other Art Fair, Brooklyn, NY, 2017- 2019, and The Other Art Fair Chicago, IL, 2018, 2019, 2023, 2024. In February 2017, she attended a month-long residency at The Studios of Key West. Recently, she was awarded the Female Lifetime Achievement Award, Art Comes Alive, ADC Fine Art Gallery, Cincinnati, 2022 and was selected for the NG Art Creative Residency in Provence, France, 2023. Her book "Enkaustik- Das Grundlagenbuch zur Wachsmalerei" was published April 2015 by Christopherus Verlag, Germany and translated into English in 2017, “How to create Encaustic Art- A guide to painting with wax”. Birgit is also a musician, singer songwriter and producer. Her music can be found on all streaming platforms under her pseudonym brightstroke. Huttemann-Holz lives and works in Detroit, USA.
