About The Artwork

The inspiration for these pieces is based around cartography and I use tools that map makers would have worked with to achieve tone and variation. The results are abstract map-like prints. Depending on the colours used, they allude to celestial star charts, or maps of the sea or land. As with all of my work, ideas around navigating place and finding our own sense of place underpin the outcomes.

Louisa Boyd graduated in 2001, showing a series of paper sculptures that used bookbinding techniques to support their structures. These artist’s books gained recognition with awards at this early stage in her career. Boyd has since worked as an artist exhibiting both nationally and internationally. Her work has been incorporated into a number of publications and also included in both national and international public collections with pieces held at King St Stephen Museum, Hungary, Baylor University, Texas, USA, The Grosvenor Museum, Chester, UK and Bank Street Arts, Sheffield, UK. Recent successes have seen her gain further recognition through exhibitions selected by prestigious juried panels and showing her work alongside some of the most well-established and respected names in contemporary art. Shortlisted for the John Ruskin prize in 2017 and having been selected for exhibition on three occasions for the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition, Boyd continues to make paintings, prints, artist’s books and paper sculptures. Her pieces honour traditional techniques such as hand marbling and acid etching yet innovate in the application of these skills. She uses abstract mark making and an explorative and inventive approach to realise new pieces which often have three-dimensional qualities.
