About The Artwork

To survive the drought we must become obsessed with water: We need to save every drop. A bucket has long been a symbol we associate with water. When water is abundant and accessible, our bucket becomes a construction of a bygone era. When water is scarce our bucket is necessary for life. I portrayed buckets on our old Cape telephone books-lists of people in our city who drink water, wash with our water, cook with our water, store it-another construction we no longer need. Put behind glass and frame, the unimportant becomes important. What we threw away, wasted, took for granted is cast in a new light, giving it status.
