About The Artwork

Limited edition giclee print of my neon of the same name (neon piece was released in 2017, though the neon part itself, the word “fragile” is from late 2013/14 and this has been a piece I took quite a few years to get around to finishing). Printed on archival museum grade Hahnemuehle Photo Rag 308gsm 100% cotton rag paper. 50cm x 50cm including a 2cm border all the way around Edition size of only 20 (in total for diamond dust and non-diamond dusted prints) Signed and numbered on the front. This piece incorporates an image of the earth from space (original unedited photo supplied by NASA) with clouds I created using friends’ baby scans. There are words hidden in the sea, on the land and in space. The piece is essentially about how we outsource our fragility over time and across generations and geographies - about how others suffer for some of our luxuries. The piece questions (via the text at the end, the artist’s adaptation of a Francis Bacon quote “for the light to shine so brightly, must the darkness always be present?”) our approach to sharing, and whether others have to suffer for many of us to live a good life. Does someone always have to lose out, can “better” ever mean “better for everyone”? The original neon itself uses a bright warm white light which is still bright in daylight - hence the light still shines brightly without darkness. The prints (do not light up) are hand embellished by Rebecca with diamond dust over the lettering of the word “fragile” which also makes the lettering pop during the day (and night). Prints are posted in a tube. ****PRINTS ARE IMAGES ON PAPER AND DO NOT LIGHT UP***** If you are interested in a copy of the light up neon, please contact Saatchi Art.

"Rebecca's work is an extraordinary mix of truth and beauty; she is able to engage her audience with brutal observations about life, love, money and culture with her simple, honest and often humorous interpretation of the modern world" (Laura Lea, curator) Rebecca Mason, often working under the pseudonym "Rococo Wonderland", is an artist using light to convey the darkness within human life, existence and emotion. This is often accompanied by a dry, self-deprecating sense of humour and candid confessions aimed at recognising and accepting our imperfections. Neon, with its seedy connotations and consumerist lure, is the brush she uses to create a gritty and simultaneously delicate world. Her inspiration is drawn from the exciting, chaotic playground of the city in which she lives. The living metropolis of London, with all its fears, questions and realisations emerge in her work via a duplicity of textual phrases and fragile luminosity. The aim is to encourage the viewer to engage, share her world and illuminations as well as identify a little of themselves and their own experiences in the work. The premise for each piece of work usually begins by referencing a feeling or event in her personal life, a micro moment in her existence which is then broadened to reflect the theme on a macro, collective, basis.
