Arts educator and visual artist; fine art, printmaking, video. Contact: orhini.k@gmail.com Artistic statement: Grid has always fascinated me not just as visual structure but also as a principle of inner organisation of things. Especially the fact that grid is dull and inactive structure which is usually seen in architecture, construction, recording (words or music), on screens, in data transfer, natural cycles, etc. Rosalind Krauss indicates that grid reflects standardisation and mass production and turns it's back on nature. The grid is a way of replacing a real dimension with an aesthetic degree. Grid establishes autonomy in art that is flat, geometrised and in order. If we sum the most transparent features of grid and its system we get to functionalism, order, clear structure, subordination of nature etc. Working with grids is a challenging especially because of its strict characteristics and regulations. My main question is always how to make artwork that is subordinated to the rules of a grid but still reflects life and living things. After all, is it not every existence and therefore creative activity subordinated to some kind of system and locked in a grid. I am mostly interested in grid as inner organisation of visual space and as a pure gestalt form. I want to test how far this narrowness and autonomy of the grid can go consequently I use paysage and portrait as my imaginary play area. I transfer an image of a person or a landscape on one or more grids that are intertwined both visually and thematically. Grids have two visual and physical characteristics linked together. One is size and space of intermediate module and the other is the structure of the grid (netting) with its interdependency and connection. These relationships give an image ability to exist in some intermediate space or in between the spaces. This can happen in the relationship between the grids, the modules or between the image and the abstraction of that image. This kind of artwork requires an ability to look with intuition and connect parts to form an image. I combine grid into painting surface, printmaking or video work.
