ABOUT THE ARTWORK

In the midst of today's madness, I realise the importance and meaning of showing nature's bounty in its tiniest, most ordinary and fragile expressions. These gifts from nature that we overlook because they are just around us, everywhere and all the time. Wild geraniums, poppies, clovers, are flowers or plants that are so common we forget them. This series of work celebrates their beauty and strength. These prints somehow also reflect parts of my journey from my home country, South Korea, to Tunisia, as it is in North Africa that I could actually take time to enjoy and observe these graceful and seemingly ordinary plants.

I am a printmaker and ceramist. I grew up in Korea, lived in France and China, and today split my time between Paris and Tunis. My work explores the shimmering beauty of impermanence, the evanescence of nature. Paradoxically, because printmaking was invented to replicate images on a like-for-like basis, I believe it can reveal in a more acute way than any other art form the ever changing nature of things, their passing and rebirth. My artwork therefore hinges on creating open times and spaces to enable the unknown to join with the known. For example, as the matrix meets the paper to create a print, I would allow imperfectly dried layers of ink to mix, or let the image interact and play in unpredictable ways with the veins of the wood. I try to give way to a force that can express itself only when we - as humans, artists - step back: the Void. As a result, though each of my prints is born from the same woodblock, lines, and gestures, each of them breathes with its own undulating colours, textures and moods. Just like the quiet mingling of shade and light underneath a persimmon tree.
