ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This square artwork shows a little garden in gold which makes it unique and precious. It is a secret garden of repeated squares with a plant motif and just one of it blooming in red or bearing fruits in red. Shouldn't there be some more plants in flower and bearing fruits? Some of the plants or bushes are turned upside down, some of the squares are filled with another structure in gold. Thus, each square is a bit different, nevertheless a repetition. The garden is designed as a grid of little, golden squares building a big square. Four square sheets of paper, filled with stamps, were glued together to a big square (40,1 x 40,1 cm) on paper leaving a white frame (full size 44,5 x 44,5 cm). The artwork is initialed in pencil.

Johanna Siegel is a scientist by training but fascinated by art from her youth on. As an artist she is interested in the area of conflict between technology and nature, near and far e.g. by optical instruments but also by travelling. Her artwork comprises a variety of subjects because the society, the diversity of cultures, and nature matter. The artist likes to experiment with materials and techniques like in a lab. In addition, she likes interactive performances because art and diversity create new spaces of possibility that not only question mental limitations. Usually, she works a bit longer on a special subject, a concept, quite tenaciously. Sometimes, she creates her art spontaneously, often with a sense of humor or criticism.
