About The Artwork

A limited edition giclée print of an image painted in late 2015. It is hand-signed in pencil, printed onto high quality, Hahnemühle German Etching paper and presented unframed. The size is the same as the original painting of 40cmx50cm but with an additional 3cm blank border area. This painting is of the same scene as the previous painting, Shambles 5 at Night, but now in the daytime. It is of a busy area in Manchester UK where 3 pubs sit next to each other including two in old 16th century timber-framed buildings and which becomes lively in the summer when people sit outside drinking. It's painted with an exciting use of colour, with rich violets, indigos and whites swirling around in the sky and a bold use of reds, magenta and orange in the surface area, all to create a cheerful vibrant energy to the scene. It is in distortive, expressionist style mixed with element of primitivism, the naïve, inspired partly by the likes of painters such as L S Lowry. Zooming in will reveal a wealth of detail in the various figures populating the image, suggesting an abundance of narratives and incidence which the viewer can fill in with his or her own imagination. Great pains have been taken to include much detail. It's the sixth version I painted of this popular scene, hence the title No.6.

Michael Gutteridge was born in Manchester, Northern England, birthplace of the industrial revolution. I began painting professionally in 2001, when, after submitting a painting in an Open Exhibition at Stockport Art Gallery, I was invited by them to present a full exhibition of 20 paintings the following year. Since then, I've continued to develop and explore my own unique vision which mostly involves trying to capture exciting, vibrant, stimulating or moodful aspects of the urban landscape, especially of my home city of Manchester and its environs. Especially, just lately, at night. I was recently shortlisted as one of the finalists from 12,000 entries for the Aesthetica Creative Arts competition. My images have been used promotionally by the University of Lancaster, the University of Manchester, in pop videos, in magazines, on the covers of books and even made into postcards by the Manchester Tourist Office. They are exhibited regularly in the North of England, and are in private collections around the world.
