In “Snapshot” the monoprinted image of the hijab, that I used to wear in Iran, creates a platform for my rendered figures to share their stories while remaining interwoven with my daily life. The printed hijab imitate the movement of a female body--what used to cover a body now resembles it. The quiet composition along with emphasis on the craftsmanship I want to create works that are more poetic than didactic.

I was born in Iran in the year of revolution and was named Azadeh: “the person who is free”. The idea of freedom has significantly influenced my life not only as an artist but as a human being. Growing up during the eight-year Iran-Iraq war made me appreciate the value of the peace with the strong inclination to stay away from any war. It was the first time that I faced semi-immigration. Tehran was getting bombarded repeatedly. We had to live in a small village to escape the bombing. But that was not the only conflict that I faced to. As an Iranian woman, we carry a battlefield on our heads; with our bodies. The way we wear a scarf and cover ourselves is not only a fashion style but a statement we make. It is about showing which side of the game we are standing. 2008 was my second and main immigration. Being minority, dealing with different rules, culture, and language; feeling insecure by any change (especially political), and numerous self-doubting were the new challenges that I deal with as an immigrant on the daily basis. I double majored in Engineering and Fine Art in Iran. I immigrated to the US in 2008 and had received my MFA as a studio artist at NYU. My art has been exhibited in different galleries (New York, California, Florida, Pennsylvania and Arizona) as well as Dubai and Iran. I was invited to have a lecture at ASU Museum in Phoenix, Arizona (2016). Also, I was shortlisted by MOPCAP (2015) as an Iranian emerging artist with the potential to make a significant impact in my field. Currently, I am teaching at different places including Metropolitan Museum of Art and NYU.
