‘Last year something in me broke. Following the premature birth of my youngest daughter I developed severe postnatal depression. Inhabiting the imperfection of motherhood, intimately aware of the raw vulnerability of the body and self, I surrendered to a humbling lack of control. Drawing with my daughter held close to my body, her presence began to direct the marks I made - both literally as I used my hands interchangeably to smudge pastels and dip feathers into ink to strike the page, and figuratively as her weight and warmth against my chest led me to draw from a place of love. During the making of this work I’ve experienced a willingness to carry and be carried - I don’t feel wholly responsible for the figures that have emerged, but I do wish to honour their fragile flesh and serpentine emotions.’ The above text accompanied an exhibition of life drawings made with my baby held close to me. This limited edition giclée print is taken from an original pastel and ink drawing shown in that exhibition. Printed on Hahnemuhle German Etching 310gsm, it's produced using archival quality inks, paper & printers approved by the Fine Art Trade Guild UK.

Katherine Sheers's artwork arises from experiences which are at once both monumental and intimate. For her, the act of making art is an extemporary and visceral one. In order to access a degree of physical empathy in her work, Sheers often employs sensory processes and rituals in her practice. Movement, touch, scent, music, discomfort and arousal are all utilised as an integral part of creating new work. Trained at Chelsea College of Art, Sheers originally worked internationally as a lingerie designer. Arising from this background, femininity and feminism are themes which often occur throughout her drawings and paintings. And while she has recently broadened her enquiry to encompass the body, motherhood and identity, the duality of the monumental and intimate, always form the foundation of her artwork. Katherine's work is held in private collections throughout the UK, USA, Qatar & Italy.
