Hand-coated by the photographer Platinum-Palladium 11 x 16 inch Print on Arches Platine paper with the image area 8 x 12 inches. Gelatin Silver Image was made on 35mm black and white Agfa Scala Silver Transparency film in June 1997 at Stonehenge, Wiltshire, England. 8 x 12 inch Digital Negative for contract printing created in 2022. Platinum-Palladium 11x16 inch print on Arches Platine paper, with the image area 8 x 12 inch. Platinum/ palladium prints are one of the most beautiful, desirable, and permanent types of photographic prints. Platinum prints are the most stable photographic printing process, with the print lasting as long as the paper it is printed on. In the case of the Arches Platine paper, it can last for more than 1000 years. The platinum/palladium printing process was first patented by William Willis Junior in 1873. The process yields an extremely long tonal range (amount of greyscale tones between black and white). It is arguably the widest tonal range photographic printing process. A wide range of tones and contrast can be obtained depending on the particular emulsion mix and the developer used. It is also the most permanent printing process, as noble metals are embedded in the paper fibres, unlike silver gelatin, where silver is suspended in the gelatin emulsion on top of a paper substrate. Due to the noble metals bounding with the paper image formed by platinum and palladium will not fade and will last as long as the paper on which it is printed. As papers used for the platinum/ palladium process need to be of the highest quality, they will last for over a thousand years if properly stored. Many of the most prominent figures in the history of the photographic medium used platinum/ palladium printing. The most notable are Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Steichen, Edward Weston, Frederick Evans, Gertrude Käsebier, Paul Strand, Imogen Cunningham, Robert Mapplethorpe and Irving Penn, among many others.
