The image is showing a figure on a cross in intense perspectival foreshortening, while around them everything seems to blossom. It is inspired by the poem "leafs falling" by famous Bulgarian poet Georgi Constantinov. It was created as part of a series of illustrations for the bilingual edition of his book " Tree and Bird", published in 2021 by Publishing House Govostis in Athens, Greece. This is a cyanotype print of the illustration, created for the solo exhibition by the artist Sophia Hadjipapa, which accompanied the book launch in Nicosia, Cyprus, in November 2021. The poem alludes to an aging man who feels love (or eros) is abandoning him just as leaves shed from autum trees. He stretches his hands in the hope of a miracle, while everything around him blooms, but have you ever seen a blooming cross? (he asks his readers...) Here is the poem: AUTUMN MAN Love Abandons me In a quiet and natural way Like the fall of autumn leaves. Faded feelings Shed off from myself In the rainy coolness. No wonder That I, The autumn man, Shall finally remain In private with The echo of my yesterday. With arms desperately outstretched Just like in a naked crucifixion I'll be endlessly expecting A new spring... But wonders seldom Happen on this earth No one has yet Seen Crucifixions come into leaf. (translation by Ljudmila Kolechkova)
