About The Artwork

A limited edition giclée print of an image painted in 2014. It is hand-signed in pencil, printed onto high quality, Hahnemühle German Etching paper and presented unframed. The size is the same as the original painting of 50cmx70cm but with an additional 2cm blank border area. This painting is of an iconic 18th century pub/tavern in Manchester named the Briton's Protection on account of how it used to be a recruiting house for soldiers during the Napoleonic Wars. It is a nocturnal scene of city life done with a rich use of colour in a distortive, expressionist style in which the poetic feelings inspired by the view are expressed. The hope is to convey the welcoming cosiness of the hostelry (the Danish word 'Hygge' comes to mind) on a summer's evening in a city wherein people are making their way towards it implying enjoyment within, yet set in a slightly mysterious and joyously beautiful landscape in which the stars beam down. It is the second version I painted of this scene, hence the title No.2, the other version being the same scene in the day time. This pub was reputed to have given shelter to victims of the notorious Peterloo Massacre of pro-democracy supporters in 1819, so is quietly drenched in history.

Michael Gutteridge was born in Manchester, Northern England, birthplace of the industrial revolution. I began painting professionally in 2001, when, after submitting a painting in an Open Exhibition at Stockport Art Gallery, I was invited by them to present a full exhibition of 20 paintings the following year. Since then, I've continued to develop and explore my own unique vision which mostly involves trying to capture exciting, vibrant, stimulating or moodful aspects of the urban landscape, especially of my home city of Manchester and its environs. Especially, just lately, at night. I was recently shortlisted as one of the finalists from 12,000 entries for the Aesthetica Creative Arts competition. My images have been used promotionally by the University of Lancaster, the University of Manchester, in pop videos, in magazines, on the covers of books and even made into postcards by the Manchester Tourist Office. They are exhibited regularly in the North of England, and are in private collections around the world.
