About The Artwork

The wooden boards that have been printed for this unique woodprint are entirely shaped by RABBITS gnawing - my part in the creative process was ONE to notice - TWO decide using them - THEN there were only four such boards - two of each I clued back to back (...how many composition options) ...so they had appeared: a woman and a man - sculptures. THEN AGAIN ...printing... those shapes (compositionally aligned to a story), a relief print - evolving into a two-dimensional work. Back and front of the boards have been printed telling a story in four consecutive images. I like the free semi-abstract shapes as just rabbits would do it – and thinking how they could have come up with shaping a woman and a man. Each figure appears three times and the wooden boards were turned over only for the final image. These is the complete set #4 of a forty piece limited edition – each print is a unique colour original – the ink being applied via roller and spatula. This project is as well presented on https://www.instagram.com/samuel.buttner/ For the sake of open edition prints / better visibility the virtual images are placed upon a mat that appears in bright white. In the photo the edges have been cut straight but the genuine wood prints are done on a high quality deckle-edged printing paper ('Zerkall') therefore slightly larger than in the photo. PLEASE NOTE that the front image shows the #3 edition while in this listing I sell the #4 edition! PLEASE VIEW the consecutive photos for those of the #4 prints that are in particular different from #3. You will find the #3 prints further below being sold individually while in this listing the complete set is on offer. Each individual print measures 43 H x 24 W inches - 86 x 61 cm. Btw other works that relate to working with RABBITS you will find in this next listing above: "Inside and Outside"; https://www.saatchiart.com/art/Sculpture-Inside-and-Outside/385342/3493509/view - and below: "Listening One and Watchman"; https://www.saatchiart.com/art/Sculpture-Listening-One-and-Watchman/385342/3196320/view - also "Composite I"; https://www.saatchiart.com/art/Printmaking-Composite-I/385342/2677362/view

London-based artist works with found objects, printed ready-mades as well as wood and bronze sculptures. Samuel Buttner exhibits internationally, has received awards and commissions for art in public spaces, and his work is held in both private and public collections. 'Remembering how my drawings as an eight-year-old received much attention, then opportunities for training during my teenage years leading to an education of professional wood sculptor. During my mid-twenties that enigmatic pull into social work with creativity for children and engagement in the special educational needs sector. The sculptor, printmaker and conceptual artist is grounded in life drawing, anatomical studies, and plein air painting. Much of the above would befriend me with Vincent van Gogh, valuing that eye-brain-hand-coordination for authentic, ecstatic expressiveness. Being equally aware how the subconscious gets visualized where it has been said that positive stimuli is evident as well as an artist philosopher, hence resonating with the like Marcel Duchamp exploring that limitless creativity-of-the-mind; that which is outside the box.'
