Art Description

Printmaking: Woodcut on Paper.

This image is hand printed with a dojang (Korean stamp) on hanji (Korean paper) using inju (Korean printing ink). It is mounted with white mount board and framed with a simple black wooden frame.

A total of 15 people were prosecuted for their role in running the ship, before abandoning responsibility and absconding. Once again, there are 304 stamps making up the composition, with each on representing a life.

With the exception of the captain, most of the convict’s faces were not shown in mainstream media, nor talked about much in the run up to their trials which ended in indictment.

The long vertical lines running down the paper symbolize each crewmember’s sentence that they will spend behind bars. The Chinese character for liability is used to construct the solid bars running down the page.
