About The Artwork

Details: Original print Cellulose transfer and UV protection on Japanese paper Print size 63 x 45cm Frame size W47cm H65cm D4cm Framed and ready to hang, float mounted (set back from the glass) with white spacers in a black frame About: Inspired by nature, travel and traditional Japanese and Chinese landscape paintings, prints, and in particular, Sansuiga (Japan) or Shanshui (China); paintings which depict an idealised landscape, primarily using the forms of mountains, rivers, clouds and mist. A unique, monochrome original mountain art print on Japanese paper, hand printed by the artist in her printmaking studio. Technique: The Half Horizon of the West was created by assembling a hand cut analog collage. Some parts were printed directly straight onto the Japanese paper and others formed in parts, which were then scanned back in to print that part as a whole in reverse as a laser print (the toner of a laser print is needed, opposed to a regular inkjet print). The collage was then transferred in sections to Japanese paper by using a solvent called cellulose thinners and rubbing the back of the laser print to transfer the toner and image to the paper to create the finished print. It was then sealed with a matt varnish to give the print UV protection, increasing lightfastness and resistance to fading.

Sherrie-Leigh Jones is an Artist and Printmaker based in Brighton, East Sussex. She creates limited edition and original landscape prints inspired by nature and changing seasons, offering the viewer a sense of escapism, a transportation to a new place and a journey through imagined landscapes. The Japanese woodblock printmaking movement known as Shin-hanga (New prints) and Sansuiga (Japan) or Shanshui (China); paintings which depict an idealised landscape using the forms of mountains, rivers, clouds and mist, inspire her prints. Mountainous landscapes and the romantic sublime also influence her work. To create her prints, she assembles collages using her travel photographs and photos taken on walks in the English countryside, which are then combined with paintings and occasionally found imagery. The finished compositions are then taken into the print studio to be exposed on screens and hand pulled as screenprints, resulting in the final artworks. Some prints are also hand printed using the cellulose transfer printing technique. Read more about the techniques used here. Jones exhibits in the UK and internationally, including the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2021. Her work is held in Jeremy Cooper's Collection and private collections in the UK, France, Germany, Taiwan, New York and L.A. In 2020, she was awarded an a-n Bursary: Time Space Money, supported by a-n The Artists Information Company and Arts Council England, and in 2018 was invited to be a part of Woolwich Contemporary Editions. In 2015, Jones was awarded a Print Futures Award and in 2013, her SS13 collaboration with fashion label, To Be Adored (tba), featured on the front cover of Grazia China.
