About The Artwork

I was inspired by a dance play my son wrote (he's a playwright and composer), called "The Heron and the Fish". We often collaborate even though we’re often living halfway around the world from one another when we share stories and inspiration. While researching a fable he had heard via various cultural sources in Indonesia, I coincidentally happened to snap a photo of a painted vignette on a temple in Bangkok that featured a heron and a crab. My son had not yet found any illustrations of his story, so was quite amazed when I showed it to him after he described his project. In my own interpretation, my etching tells the story of the greedy heron eating up all the fish in the sea. My image features two herons but they are really one and the same - the heron on the left consumes the fish but his alter ego on the right tells the story. Meanwhile, the crafty crab saves the day by snapping off the neck of the heron, which is foreshadowed by his wrapped wound, making it difficult for him to swallow. This etching became the image used on the poster promoting the play, which my son directed at the Bali Purnati Center of the arts and at the Museum of Modern Art, also in Bali. Village children played the fish, and professional Balinese actors and dancers played the heron and crab.
