Original Serigraph # 58/175 handprinted by the artists, Elizabeth Scott and Hal Lindhagen. This serigraph depicts an iceberg, probably calved in Greenland, now floating in Baffin Bay. In the foreground the flukes of sounding whales. About our process: This image went through a number of stages, sketches and studies to compile into the full size “master drawing” , from which many different stencils were prepared by the artists (Liz and Hal). Each imprint requires some time to set up, register, add oil paints to the screen, blend, consider the color and the gradation, and when satisfactory, then screen that color onto all the sheets of rag paper. (We typically started with 50 sheets of paper, which allows leeway for experimenting, and does not take too long for each imprint.) there is always clean-up too. In that way, we could sometimes do several color imprints in one day. It generally goes from printing large areas that set the tone, to gradually more detailed imprints to set the realistic feel of our work. But there is an unmistakable quality to a piece of art that is made in this medium.
