My artwork reflects on thoughts around existential philosophy, ecology and climate change. 'Transcendence of self' is a 4 colour plate Lithograph printed on BFK Rives paper. I created this particular piece because it resonated with ideas put forward by Ernest Becker in his book, ' Denial of death' where he suggests ' The idea of death, the fear of it, haunts the human animal like nothing else; it is a mainspring of human activity - activity designed largely to avoid the fatality of death, to overcome it by denying in some way that it is the final destiny for man'. We are living in the Anthropocene age, where human activity dominates and tries to control nature, losing sight as field Ecologist, Dr Stephen Woodley postulates' We are part of nature and we do not exist without it. If biodiversity disappears, so do people'. I chose a Lithograph to express this work, because the tension between water and oil, demonstrates how we need to learn to co-operate with nature, not control it.
