In his book ‘Lore of The Unicorn’, Odell Shepard describes the Unicorn as being interesting ‘almost entirely as a denizen of “The Monarch Thought’s Dominion”’ i.e. as a creation of man’s imagination. There are many animals caught up in the unicorn legend, which have been commingled over time to produce various descriptions of the mysterious beast. These include the rhinoceros, the ibex, goat, ox, narwhal, okapi, and even the orangutan! The story of the unicorn has been entwined with those of real animals, most just as strange and fascinating themselves, and reveal just as much about us and our engagement with the natural word, as they do about the unicorn itself. Here are a few of them represented in this print. Each of these limited edition screen prints have been individually hand coloured with water colours, alluding to traditional natural history illustrations to illustrate a very unscientific history of nature.

Anna Walsh is a British Artist whose work investigates the relationship humans have with animals and nature. She practices traditional style illustrations and techniques to convey an accurate representation, while drawing on popular culture and approaches to present a contemporary slant to her work. She mainly uses drawing, watercolours, oil paints and screen prints, as well as digital media and book arts. Although her work is heavily influenced by natural history illustrations, the content is somewhat less scientific and more concentrated on the social roles of animals in our lives. She is a founding member of the art collective Garudio Studiage, for whom she designs and makes various products for sale, (which are sold in gallery shops and boutiques including The Museum of London, The British Library and The South London Gallery) or works on larger commissions alongside the other members. She has had several solo exhibitions at Westbourne Grove Church Art Space, and has work in collections such as Tate Gallery London Artists' Book Collection as well as various private collections.
