In 1989, I became captivated by the luminous properties of an unusual type of finger paint that had been given to my young son. Experimenting on glossy paper with the Surrealist technique of decalcomania, I discovered I could produce an endless array of vivid abstracts which surprised me with their mesmerizing interplay of colour and line. Over the next decade, I occasionally exhibited originals and prints of these images—which I called “variegraphs” for their vibrant linear and prismatic complexity—but it wasn't until the turn of the millennium that I began to explore the possibilities of selective scanning and computer manipulation. This initial phase of digital variegraphy lasted not more than a year or so before I began sampling and layering details of the altered images to see what would emerge. These new processes yielded mandala-like squares which could be repeated to create entrancing patterns. I called the hallucinatory results of this next generation of vareigraphy “tryptiles.” Along with their slightly divergent “varietile” form, they have remained the principal mode of my artistic adventuring ever since.

As well as being a visual artist, I am a poet whose books include Spiral Agitator (Coach House Books, 2000), Floors of Enduring Beauty (Mansfield Press, 2007), and The Least You Can Do Is Be Magnificent: Selected & New Writings (Feed Dog/Anvil Press, 2017). Through my Torpor Vigil Records label, I have released several albums of somniloquies, soundscapes, and songs, including The Tubular West by Samuel Andreyev and Dreaming Like Mad with Dion McGregor: Yet More Outrageous Recordings of the World’s Most Renowned Sleeptalker. As a purveyor of neurotechnology in the 1990s, I exploited the psychedelic potential of pulsed light with my Hallucintatorium—a sort of retinal-circus sideshow that earned me the designation of “Toronto’s prime purveyor of non-chemically altered states” (Eye Weekly). My latest project, alongside continuing to develop digital art techniques, is a non-fiction book about the dream world of legendary sleeptalker Dion McGregor, to feature dozens of new transcriptions of McGregor’s outlandish somnolent narratives.
