I see my art as an intuitive expression that is transformed into a physical entity. I work with many different subjects, not fixed on any one idea. Many of my subjects incorporate self-identity with the human figure. For me, art is a journey; a state of being, independent of outcome. It’s about spending time with myself, and through this process, I am awakened. Through my artwork, I hope to pass on to the viewer my inspiration to see and recognize the subject, not only to look at the piece. This sculpture was incorporated into a performance piece I directed called Domestication of the Bull. I illustrated the subject of the ego of man in a similar vein as artist Olga Kuraeva’s improvisation contemporary ballet. I developed the performance to convey the idea of a bullfight as a metaphor for the struggle with the one’s own nature through a visual representation. The performance tells the story of an un-awakened man who lives an ordinary life. He senses there is more to life than this physical everyday life. On his journey he discovers that there is a bull (ego) within who directs and influences him in all his actions. He feels frightened and intends to slay the bull. The battle goes on until the man discovers that the bull is a part of himself and does not need to be killed. It takes a while until, finally, the man learns mindfulness to control the animal nature (physical desire). The bull is not the enemy. With patience he becomes more familiar with the bull's character and learns to have a dialogue with it. The man learns to direct the animal and connect with it in order to tame it. It takes a while until the bull allows himself to be guided. Then finally, they become friends. Step by step the man becomes the master of the bull; he becomes one with the bull and harmonizes his awareness with the animal consciousness. The man is content and at peace and the bull is leashed. This Part 1 of 5 bulls in نفس (The Nafs Series) representing ego at different states of liberation.
