Fredericksburg TX USA, April 8, 2024. Great American Eclipse. Until totality, for more than an hour and a half, we were able to photograph the different phases of the solar eclipse. Soon after totality, cloud cover made photography of the eclipse impossible. The photos are taken at 11.58, 12.28, 13.06, 13.18 and 13.31. The photos are inversions, transferred to the ceramic tiles and fused into the glaze. The ceramic tiles can also be purchased separately.

The longing for the landscape of my youth has been a source of inspiration for my work for years: The flat land near the North Sea on the edge of the continent. Themes such as the Dutch Landscape, the ship, water, wind, clouds, movement represent this nostalgia. In recent years my focus has been on a different theme. I have been interested in astronomy since high school, but only now I found time to study and attend lectures on physics and astronomy. There was a certain logic to me in visualizing this learning process in ceramics, the material I’ve been working with for more than 40 years. My aim is to show the beauty of logic and science. Since 2020 I have been working on the series “Notes on Matter and Antimatter”. These are ceramic tiles that you can think of as the pages of a workbook. I have explored topics in physics and astronomy, for example: Bubble chamber photos showing the movements of subatomic particles. I am currently working on another project: April 8 2024, I was in Texas for the total solar eclipse. The photos I took will be used in my next project: 2024 Great American Eclipse.
