About The Artwork

2020 changed many things for me as an artist. After extreme isolation during the height of the pandemic, the mere sight of groups of people fascinated me as well as gave me anxiety. I found myself photographing people from very far distances, and began collaging them together to make interesting designs. Using color and composition, these designs were a way to make people social distance again. “5.30.22 II” is a framed piece that is a cross between collaged photography and sculpture. Subjects are photographed, manipulated, printed, and cut out leaving their feet attached to the print. Each cutout person leans forward creating a halfway between 2D and 3D, and they cast their own shadows. The final presentation is a print mounted to board, framed with 1/2" spacers inside and artist’s shadow box with no glass. Influenced by a combination of Irving Parker, Massimo Vitali, and Where's Waldo, this piece inspired me to break out of the 2D art world and create physical pieces once again.

Jacob Watts is a photographer and visual storyteller based in Chicago. He creates illustrative and conceptual images with an emphasis on post production. Jacob found a love for digital art around the age of thirteen and developed an early aesthetic that has grown with him over the years. Initially he used stock imagery to composite his artworks but often found those images to be limiting. This inspired him to photograph his subjects and sceneries himself which grew into a stock imagery base of his own to use. Inspired by this process, he went to Columbia College Chicago for a BFA in photography. This experience massively helped shape, structure, and inform his digital art practices. He currently resides in Chicago, and is the creator of the giant moose blowing bubblegum mural. Working as a photographer, retoucher, and artist, Jacob is always pushing his creative ideas. He is passionate about collaboration and loves finding creative solutions to exceed client’s expectations.
