About The Artwork

This work was inspired by James Lovelock's theory of Gaia and draws on the concept that all life is interconnected. Each figure is connected via is arms and legs to four other figures, thus forming a tetrahedral lattice such as the one formed in Diamond by the connection of each carbon atom to four others. This is a second version of this idea, where I have extended the Tetrahedral lattice further to produce a larger piece. It has also drawn out more interesting observations on the geometry of the lattice, from some angles the rythmic pattern of the figures gives the impression of waves travelling through the work. This sculpture is cast as an edition of 8. The next available cast (correct July 2017) is 6/8. It is initialled and edition numbers on the leg of one of the bottom figures.

Briony Marshall is a UK based sculptor and installation artist. With a background in Biochemistry she is interested in the idea of art practice as research. She fuses an intellectual/conceptual approach with an intuitive, materials inspired process to develop sculptures that investigate the natural world and man’s place in it. In 2012 she completed the Pangolin London Sculpture Residency which culminated in a solo show at Pangolin London in May 2013. She awarded a bursary by the Royal Society of Sculptors in 2008 and later went on to be elected as a sculptor member of its board of trustees. She is head of Professional Development at The Art Academy and was recently named as one of the ‘175 Face of Chemistry’ to celebrate the 175th anniversary of the Royal Society of Chemistry. In 2015 she was shortlisted as one of the five finalist for the First@108 Public Art Award, and has recently completed a B.E.A.F. and Arts Council funded commission for a large rammed earth public artwork on Hengitsbury Head in Bournemouth. She is currently working on an exciting large scale commission for a School Science Building.
