About The Artwork

If you are new to my work, welcome to the abstract world of the wood forms. I strive to find dynamic and strong expressions of life's puzzles, ironies and the human condition. In our journey together as a species we travel across the landscape of experience, riding up and down over the bumps and hills and winding streets and rivers. Underlying this all is an unmovable presence, a field of stillness and peace which never wavers. This is the life force which binds us with other forms on the planet and it is this which I bring into my sculptures through metaphor, dancing intimately and intrinsically with the physical material — the space and emptiness surrounding the form, without which the form could not exist. On the concept: With Form and Formless No. 7, the concavity develops from underneath the form. The emptiness is somewhat cradled and given weight as the material envelopes it. The interplay between form and space suggests a certain importance for the container. Modern science has gone so far to tell us that most of matter is space at the atomic level. Consciously, I would define space as that which is not thought (when thought is seen as a material process). So, as metaphor the sculpture functions at different levels. Ultimately, it's the inherent dance between the manifest and the mystery which lies beyond. On the form and material: Freestanding and structural, organic and harmonious — the form succeeds in supporting itself with gravity. Within this structural balance we find a dynamic interplay of parts, engaged and interacting in subtle yet energetic ways. Through the abstract expression, elements from nature emerge as the form is constructed to stand freely. The carving block consisted of one piece of wood. The surface is waxed with a beeswax/mineral oil mixture. This brings out the richness in the colour and contrast, and adds a sheen.
