The 4th in the "Opportunity" series, the form embodies a certain character as it stands freely on 3 legs. Certain elements from the natural world around me come out in my sketches of these forms. In this case I think I was influenced by a wasp. The "Opportunity" series explores holes and concavities as voids yet to be filled, hence the title. In this form, the concavity spans two conjoined parts and partakes in the symbiotic theme of shared space.

This form is made from 4 pieces of wood cut from the same board. The grain direction is matched and each piece is carefully planed flat with a hand plane and laminated together. In the carving of this piece I used a variety of hand saws, a drawknife, chisels, knives, scrapers and sandpaper. This wood is particularly figured giving the sculpture a marbled surface pattern. I chose not to wax this piece once I finished sanding it. The grain colouration is so subtle and beautiful as it is - with an untreated surface. With the natural surface, holding the sculpture in the hands with the scent eminating from the wood enhances the viewing experience. The pureness of the curves and contours as well as the softness of the natural surface can be felt.
