The arched tripod concept was developed further in this form with an extended leg. In exploring the artificial and out of place the leg was added to seem somewhat unnatural. This is to give the sculpture a feeling of carrying a burden or being very aware of its physicality. The sculpture is smooth and the curves and contours are purified to bring all the parts together in a tight knit unified whole as well as adding to the tactile experience. The tension between the parts and the harmonic whole comprise the two layers of meaning which are important in this concept. The piece is designed to be carved from wood. The interaction between the growth rings and the form is desirable and this natural plant material is celebrated and displayed. Part of the "Symbiosis" series of sculptures the form contains an element of movement and evolution where the separate parts share connections in an abstract way. The theme of symbiosis in culture, architecture and society provides inspiration for this series. The form's interaction with the surrounding space is also an integral part of the work. The leg was attached with a dowel for strength. The main body was formed by laminating wood together. To do this, I hand planed each side before gluing together. A variety of hand tools were used in the carving process including chisels, knives, gouges and pull saws. The beeswax treatment enriches the deepness of the colour and provides a lustre to the surface.
